Christmas is the season for sharing and giving apart from merry-making.
The Children Liturgy Teachers (Mandarin Group) of the Cathedral Of Holy Spirit, Penang really live up to the true meaning of Christmas again this year.
The Children Liturgy Teachers (Mandarin Group) of the Cathedral Of Holy Spirit, Penang really live up to the true meaning of Christmas again this year.
Initiated by Mr. Bernard Chye (蔡美杰) and ground work being carried out by Mr. Peter Goh (吴国宾, who has earlier donated a notice board and a shoe rack to the Home) and Ms. Madeleine Toh (涂仁菱), the Liturgy Class teachers, their children and the Liturgy Class students and many other non-Christian individuals who shared the same Christmas joy, all of them have collected a total of RM7,429 for Persatuan Kebajikan Shammah (Reg. No.: 0024-08-PPG) at No. 5, Jalan Nilam, Bagan Ajam, 13000 Butterworth, Penang.
The whole team has visited the Persatuan Kebajikan Shammah on Dec 26, 2010 to share the joy of Christmas with about 15 children staying there.
They sang ....
and they laughed together.....
From the total collected amount of RM7,429, RM2,189 was used for the home’s children school uniforms, shoes, socks, school miscellaneous fees, renewal of “Road Tax” for the vehicle used for the home’s residents, etc. The balance of RM5,240 has been handed over to the caretakers of the home, Steven and Josephine.
Apart from the cash, clothing and accessories mentioned above, the Liturgy Class teachers have also collected rice, food and many other consumable goods from the parishioners of Cathedral of Holy Spirit and their friends. Apart from that, through Bernard Chye (蔡美杰), 2 units of refurbished computers have been donated to the Home by Abbott Laboratories (M) Sdn Bhd.
"The more the merrier", this is very true when we carry out charity work. A total of RM1,540 (part of the RM5,240 balance cash) was collected by Ms. Tan Lay Peng (陈俐頻) from the generous staff of Avago Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd and Agilent Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd.
“These kids are very well-taught and have a great sense of gratitude.... apart of being energetic and lively. They participated in everything like a big family, helped doing house chores of keeping the home clean….. I felt I have given too little to them, and was touched to see the excitement and joy of these brilliant kids….”, said Ms. Sharon Thean, one of the Liturgy Class teachers.
As for the Liturgy Class students and parishioners' children, this sharing has also given them the opportunity to understand the true meaning of "saving" and "giving".
I would say that the most important realization for the Liturgy Class children is to appreciate and make full use of whatever they have instead of focusing on what they do not.
Brief background of Persatuan Kebajikan Shammah.....
Persatuan Kebajikan Shammah or Shammah Home (Reg. No. 0024-08-PPG) is situated at Seberang Perai, Butterworth, just next to SMK Dato’ Oon; before the RMAF Base if you travel from Butterworth towards Kepala Batas along the old trunk road.
It is a home for abandoned children. Their parents are mostly drug addicts or abandoned single parent who in turn, abandoned them.
It is run by a very generous couple, Steven and Josephine.
The home has around 14 children and most of them are schooling kids. Steven and Josephine’s aim is to keep these children and teenagers off the streets and provide them with proper shelter and most importantly, education, which is vital to their future.
It was said that up to now, Persatuan Kebajikan Shammah has yet to receive any form of official support from the authority. Public donations are sought after to pay for the children’s transport to school, tuition fees, house rent and the purchase of groceries for their daily use.
Due to lack of fund, Shammah Home find it extremely difficult to make ends meet every month, not to mention taking in even an additional unfortunate child who needs help. Imagine what could happen to these children loitering around the streets with our existing social environment of which we do not even allow our children to go beyond our house gate ?
For those who are willing to be the instruments of God to spread the joy of Christ and carry out the good deeds, please do so at the address stated below. You can also contact Steven or Josephine for further details.
Currently the home is depending on limited public donations and most of Steven's personal income.
We do not need to be rich to do charity, because there is no physical yardstick to measure “richness”. Everything is in our hearts.
